The Issue — Radon Risks in Utah

Radon is an odorless and colorless radioactive gas that occurs naturally in Utah’s soil and can seep into homes and other buildings, posing serious health risks. With 1 in 3 Utah homes testing high for radon, well above the EPA’s action level, the danger is significant for families across the state. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. and the leading cause among non-smokers, yet many Utahns are unaware of the risks that come with radon exposure. Declaring Radon Action and Awareness Month in Utah is a crucial step in encouraging testing, mitigation, and policy action to protect public health. By supporting this resolution, state leaders are helping to raise awareness and prevent lung cancer in Utah communities.

HEAL Connection to S.C.R. 5

This past Utah State Legislative session, Senator Keven Stratton sponsored S.C.R. 5 Concurrent Resolution Recognizing Radon Action and Awareness Month. The resolution was worked out with community activists who have developed lung cancer from radon exposure, radon researchers, and HEAL Utah! On the last day of the 2025 legislative session, the resolution passed the House of Representatives at 9:50 pm and was signed by the Governor on March 19th.

Why You Should Care

Radon exposure has far-reaching implications beyond individual health, impacting clean energy policy, the economy, and overall public safety in Utah.

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, contributing to nearly 21,000 deaths annually in the U.S. In Utah, where 1 in 3 homes has dangerous radon levels, this risk is even more pressing. Without proper testing and mitigation, thousands of Utahns are unknowingly exposed to this radioactive gas, increasing healthcare costs and placing strain on families and medical systems.

Radon is naturally released from the decay of uranium in soil and rock, particularly in states like Utah with high uranium deposits. Some human activities, such as mining for resources and building and road development—can disturb radon deposits, increasing exposure risks. Prioritizing safe, renewable energy sources and stronger building codes can help limit radon exposure while promoting a healthier, more sustainable future.

Failing to address radon exposure comes with economic consequences. Lung cancer treatment costs are substantial, with radon-induced cases leading to ballooning medical expenses. In contrast, radon testing and mitigation—typically costing $11 – 100 for a test (check out Utah Department of Environmental Quality’s Radon Program for low-cost options!)  and $1,500–$2,500 for mitigation—are relatively inexpensive preventative measures. Income restrictions make you worry that you can’t afford a test? Contact the Utah Radon Coordinator for financial options. Additionally, high radon levels can decrease property values and complicate home sales, making radon awareness vital for homeowners and real estate markets.

Policy & Action

By declaring Radon Awareness Month, Utah leaders are taking an important step toward educating residents, promoting testing, and encouraging mitigation efforts. This not only protects public health but also supports economic stability and aligns with clean energy goals by raising awareness of the risks associated with uranium and nuclear policies.
