Utah is Not for Sale!

Over 150 Utahns gathered in the rotunda of the Capitol to tell their legislators that “Utah is not for sale.” It appears the public outcry over EnergySolutions’ bribe to the people of Utah in exchange for permission to dump foreign nuclear waste in our state has caused the Legislature to back away from the proposal.

However, EnergySolutions remains committed to bringing the world's waste into our state. The company is now in court arguing that the Northwest Compact, the authority under which our state can refuse to accept foreign waste, has no jurisdiction over their site. Remember all those ads in which EnergySolutions claims to want what is best for Utah? If that is the case, why won’t they accept the clear “No” voiced by our representatives at multiple levels of government?

Clearly, EnergySolutions has committed itself to bringing foreign nuclear waste into Utah no matter what. Our only long-term guarantee for keeping world's nuclear waste out of Utah and the U.S. comes from Representative Jim Matheson’s proposal in Congress to ban the importation of nuclear waste outright (HR 515).
