Help end dangerous nuclear waste scheme

The Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) is a costly, dangerous program that would spend billions of taxpayer dollars on reviving the past failures of nuclear waste reprocessing while committing the U.S. to taking on the burden of disposing high-level nuclear waste from around the world.

In the waning days of the Bush administration, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released a required environmental assessment of the proposed GNEP program that is now open for public comment.

Please write the DOE today to urge them to cancel the dangerous GNEP program. The deadline for comments is March 16.

Dear Mr. Schwartz,

The Global Nuclear Energy Partnership is a waste of taxpayer money and the administration should cancel it and the corresponding Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) process immediately. GNEP commits the U.S. to a failed technology--nuclear waste reprocessing--and then compounds the problem by requiring the U.S. to import spent nuclear fuel from around the world. The National Academy of Sciences estimates that reprocessing and plutonium re-use would cost taxpayers at least an additional $100 billion for waste disposal.

In addition, reprocessing does not solve the waste problem. GNEP's draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Assessment states that the volume of all nuclear wastes that would be generated would be many times greater than the volume of the original spent fuel. Some of that waste could end up in Utah.

The GNEP program should be canceled immediately and the administration should instead take proactive steps to discourage nuclear waste reprocessing worldwide.
