In his State of the Union address, President Obama noted that "our ability to influence others depends on our willingness to lead." In the wake of North Korea’s recent nuclear test, it’s clear renewed U.S. leadership to combat the threats posed by nuclear weapons and proliferation is needed. A sensible first step for protecting America from global nuclear dangers is ratifying the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. Nuclear power: Folly, foe or friend?

Syndicated columnist Gwynne Dyer usually writes with knowledge and accuracy. Not so in "Nuclear madness" (Opinion, Nov. 28). His cavalier "nobody died" attitude is not a legitimate criterion for expanding nuclear plants. Dyer is weak on addressing accidents, natural disasters, security, terrorist attacks, long-term radioactive waste storage and the exorbitant costs to build and maintain more plants. |
