I breathed a sigh of relief as I read recently that Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar has continued his cautious approach to uranium mining on the Grand Canyon Rim ("Salazar extends uranium mining ban at Grand Canyon National Park," Oct. 26). The Grand Canyon is a national treasure, unique among the many national parks we have, and this area should be guarded as a treasure for all to enjoy. Thank you to Salazar for putting the health and economy of America before the profits of a few and for helping us to preserve this amazing area for future generations. Protect Grand Canyon

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK — Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced Wednesday that his agency favors a 20-year ban on any new uranium mining on federal lands adjacent to the Grand Canyon National Park. That decision is contained in a final environmental impact statement and will extend a moratorium put into effect in 2009. The ban, which impacts a million acres, was applauded by environmental groups, as well as recreation and tourism businesses. |
