HEAL Utah: Governor Herbert, Turn These Trains Around
Dec 20, 2009
Fox13
SALT LAKE CITY - Environmental group, HEAL Utah, wants Governor Gary Herbert to turn back a train transferring depleted uranium into the state. The train carrying 5,000 drums of depleted uranium will be making its way to Utah from South Carolina and should arrive by Monday. HEAL Utah called Governor Herbert to take a dramatic step to keep this material out of the state. Governor Herbert asked the Federal Government to halt the shipment and a compromise was later reached. The barrels will still be delivered but they will not be buried until the state can ensure it is safe. Christopher Thomas of HEAL Utah said, "This is wrong, it's an abuse of our state's rights, it's a threat to our health and environment and our message today is simple. Governor Herbert, turn these trains around." HEAL Utah argues this shipment is just the beginning. There is at lease 700,000 more tons of depleted uranium at Federal facilities that will eventually need burying. "We need a leader, a governor who isn't just trying to mitigate the damage, but a leader who is playing to win," Thomas said. |
