Addressing air pollution and climate change with clean energy

This weekend, for the third year in a row, I’ll be traveling to Washington, D.C., to push Congress to enact meaningful legislation that will rein in climate change. Many people would view this as a fool’s errand, given the gridlock that exists in Washington right now, but I’ve found a number of reasons to be hopeful.

Besides, this is one problem where failure is not an option.

Utah’s Air Quality Board endorses EPA’s clean-car plan as a smog solution

The state’s policy-setting Air Quality Board gave its endorsement Wednesday to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal to clean up vehicles and the gasoline they use.

In a telephonic meeting, the panel voted 5-0 to send a letter to EPA voicing strong support for the new standards, which would be phased in beginning in 2017.

Group wants Stericycle shut down in light of air quality violation

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's leading air quality organization made up of doctors wants state regulators to yank the permit of a North Salt Lake medical waste incinerator company because of "egregious" violations reported in late May.

Dr. Brian Moench, president of Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment, said the state Division of Air Quality should hold a public hearing when it comes to deciding the potential penalty levied against Stericycle.

Utah air quality regulators target hair spray

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s air quality regulators have taken a final step to ban the sale of aerosols like hair spray with high concentrations of hydrocarbons, raising the hackles of beauty salon owners.

The limits on consumer goods are part of a plan to curb smog that can choke the greater Salt Lake City area.

Utah is under pressure from the federal government to reduce emissions.
