Thank you for your editorial endorsing Senate ratification of the new START treaty ("Ratify new START treaty," Nov. 16). I moved from Utah to Oregon and realize clearly that some issues exist above the fray of partisan politics. The safety of our country and of the planet on which it is located is one such issue. New START would remove hundreds of nuclear warheads now deployed on ballistic missiles and reintroduce on-site verification inspections by both Russian and American inspectors.

The Cold War may have ended, at least in a practical sense, and terrorism may be the national-security focus of the day, but it would be a grave mistake to ignore relations with the one other nation on earth that has a nuclear arsenal to rival that of the United States.

The lame-duck Senate reportedly is ready to consider ratification of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, or START, in coming days. Senators ought to vote to ratify.

Bipartisan Utah pair pushes N-treaty

Washington • A pair of state lawmakers are pressing Utah’s senators to support a new nuclear arms treaty with Russia and are calling for its passage before the end of the year.

State Reps. Ryan Wilcox, a Republican, and Jennifer Seelig, a Democrat, believe the New START Treaty has become unnecessarily partisan and say any further delay threatens national security.

President Ronald Reagan famously used the Russian proverb “doveryai, no proveryai” — “trust but verify” — when he was negotiating the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with the Soviet Union. START marked a major step in both nations’ agreeing to cut their exorbitant arsenals of nuclear weapons. Since then,“trust but verify” became the philosophy governing all U.S. arms control agreements.
