Following a recent court ruling, little stands in the way of EnergySolutions' plans to import thousands of tons of foreign nuclear waste from Italy and other countries.
Now more than ever, we need sensible policy at the federal level to prevent Utah from becoming the world's dumping ground. Fortunately, Rep. Jim Matheson-D and Rep. Jason Chaffetz-R are co-sponsoring the Radioactive Import Deterrence (RID) Act, which would ban the import of foreign nuclear waste. Our senators Orrin Hatch-R and Robert Bennett-R need encouragement from YOU to jump on the bandwagon and support a companion bill in the senate. Click here to take action.
A 740,000 TON PROBLEM
Thanks to a recent ruling by The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an estimated 740,000 tons of depleted uranium is now one step closer to finding a permanent home in Utah’s West Desert.
By deciding to treat depleted uranium as Class A waste, the least-hazardous category of radioactive waste, the NRC made a clear choice of convenience over science. Considering that depleted uranium grows more radioactive over time and will eventually exceed the hotter standards of Class B & C Waste, we deserved a better solution from our federal regulators.
But the fight to stop depleted uranium from slipping in through the regulatory back door isn’t over. Click here to learn more.
The Healthy Environment Alliance of Utah (HEAL Utah) works to engage citizens in efforts to protect public health from nuclear and toxic waste and promote clean energy policies for our state. With the help of our members, we are working to create a world in which people, not polluters, determine Utah’s environmental and energy policies.
